You could call it sound art, but it’s viscerally vulnerable.” -The New York Times The emergence of a new calendar year often brings forth feelings of contemplation, a softer focus, and an excavation of the multitudes for what this world can become throughout the course of her continued solar rotations. Some of us set resolutions while others take deeper breaths, some of us grind through the holidays while others have time off to sit with our (chosen) families for more time than we often have. We listen to our rhythms, we adapt, we renew. claire rousay is an artist in constant audit of our sonic universe. In her practice of amplifying the minutiae of everyday life she gives form and beauty to the soundscape of the world, with unflinching honesty, composing a significant soundtrack for our current situation within the ballet mécanique of the anthropocene. We’ve become entranced, mesmerized, and throughout this Winter Residency it is both ours and claire’s hope to place this focus on community and communication. This is not a residency rooted in performance, but of dialogue. Through group conversation, audience participation, and exploring the overlapping margins in our arts practices, we’ll step into this year with a gentle patience tended with care and intention.
